Gotta love all of you! ;-) Also, BIG HUGE thanks and a cyber Mamo-chan to Sakura, my beta reader. Meredith Legal Disclaimer: Don't own Sailor Moon, never had. It's Naoko's! By Meredith Bronwen Mallory mallorys-girl@cinci.rr.com Serenaıs feet hit the floor of the sandy alley, her heart and body racing, her blood singing with panic. Like a wild, untamed creature, her odango-ed hair flew about her, adding gold to the blur of pink. Lita, her mind speak fearful, flashing green. fearpanicdespair Amyıs thoughts were a jumbled mess of blue, but the girls got the general impression. Behind them, three Negacops were hot on their trail, their mind voices shouting at the children to stop, give up, that there was no hope. Still the girls evaded their would-be captors, weaving in and out of the crowded streets of Istambul. Raye asked accusingly, her words red over the whisper line. the other girl retorted, referring to the apple sheıd attempted to steal. Her panic had leaked from her mind when sheıd been caught, and a nearby Negacop had picked it up. Molly put in, Raye said determinedly, as they rounded the corner and dashed into the masses crowding the market place. Lita shouted, splitting off from the main group, her green clothed body quickly becoming lost in the crowd. Serena cried, Amy managed, Then she too was gone, at least physically. Serenaıs eyes widened with fear, but she obeyed her friends, branching off from the main group when she reached a side street. Belatedly she realized it was a very stupid mistake. The crowd protected her, the more people around her, the less likely the Negacops would shoot with their trank guns. she heard Raye declare over the whisper line. She caught the impression of a trank dart whizzing by the dark haired girlıs ear, and fed what little courage she had to her friend. Molly moaned tiredly. Lita ordered her. Mina wanted to know. Serena hissed, She herself felt incredibly tired, and knew that the tall, frightening woman behind her was gaining ground. Rounding the corner sharply, Serena gave a little cry of pain as her shoulder slammed into the sandstone wall of some residential building. The Negacop was closing in... Pain flaring in her shoulder, Serena found her escape. Around the next corner, a dumpster stood, and the blond girl quickly scampered inside. Serena felt the Negacop round the corner, heard the crunch of her hard black boots on the sandy ground, felt the air crackle with her thoughtless evil. Pressing herself against the hard metal back of the dumpster, she closed her eyes and concentrated. Pain flared in her shoulder, but Serena squeezed her eyes shut more tightly and continued to erect the illusion, She thought with such conviction, and such imagination, that her illusion fooled the Negacop, who quickly back tracked, searching for her prey. With a sigh of relief, Serena let her body relax, trying to block out the pain as she reached out for her friends to see how they were doing. Mina informed her worriedly, guilt filtering through the whisper line. Serena assured the other girl, Inwardly, she added, Œsheıs got toı, before sending courage and strength Mollyıs way. ----- Darien was lost. He wandered down the deserted back streets of Istanbul, worry crowding in closer with each passing moment. he thought of poor Kunzite, whoıd been flogged the other day for a crime still unknown. He honestly hadnıt meant to get lost, but the streets were so crowded, and one minute heıd been right behind Andrew, listening to the Negacop as he gave them the grand tour, and the next heıd been totally lost in a sea of strange *normals* that leaked like the dickens. He was frightened and scared, but suddenly, those feelings just disappeared as his mind brushed against *her*. She was near, Darien could feel it. His pace, once a frightened shuffle, broke into a run as he dashed down the alleyway, rounding corners, each time hoping to find her beyond the turn of he wall. Each time he was disappointed, but still he drove onward, he *knew* he was getting closer. In the middle of the deserted back street, he stopped, his eyes resting on a dumpster. It emanated pain, fear and confusion, as dumpsters should not. *She* was inside. Serena felt some one approach, and in her fear, didnıt check to see who it was. It couldnıt be one of the girls, they were all still running, or hiding. Belatedly she began to think of herself as a mouse again, but she couldnıt fool the approaching psyche. The lid of the dumpster lifted, letting the midday sun in, and Serena didnıt even look at her captorıs face, all she saw was the Negacorps pin on the lapel, and she began to scream. That is, until a voice entered her mind. the mind voice sounded hurt, and was painfully familiar. Promptly the young girl stopped her wailing and looked up into the deep blue eyes of the boy sheıd been searching for. she burst into tears. Darien lifted the lid of the dumpster, staring down at the golden rabbit hidden away inside. The girl, *his* girl, suddenly began to scream, fear and terror washing over Darien in endless waves as she did so. heıd asked, hurt. Then , the wailing stopped, and the girl looked up at him. Their eyes met and they stared at one another for a very long time. She was like the angels his Aunt had been so found of talking about, her golden hair pulled back in twin buns, little silver and gold charms woven into the locks, so that they jingled together whenever she moved her head. Her pink dress was patched in several places, and a bright red scarf was tied about her waist. On second thought, she looked kind of like a gypsy of sorts. she said at last, her mind voice jumbled with emotion, She never finished, she was crying, salty tears that trailed down her flushed cheeks endlessly. Without thinking, Darien climbed in the dumpster, letting the lid slam behind him as he crawled up to the girl and put his arms somewhat awkwardly around her. As she sobbed against him, he sent wave after wave of compassion and sympathy towards her. Slowly, the cries subsided, and she rested against him, her breathing ragged. she informed him blithely, her regular, happy countenance shinning through. The young boy smiled over the plain of golden curls. she looked up at him with a smile, she unknowingly sent him images of the frightening woman with her chiseled face, the same one whoıd been chasing her. Darien shuddered, and tightened his hold on her. he said, For a moment a small, almost unnoticeable temptation formed in his mind. If he let her go, he might never see her again, but if he turned her in... sheıd never forgive him, and heıd loose her for sure. Serena raised her head, and for a moment Darien feared heıd somehow leaked, but her eyes held nothing but happiness and friendship. they climbed out of the dumpster, Serena projecting an empty alley while Darien searched for a way out. By now they both figured all the main exits had been blocked off by Negacops, and even the best illusion would never get Serena past *them*. Darien cried in delight. Pushing the dumpster away, he revealed a hole in the wall. Someone had obviously thought the big tin box would cover the flaw, but Darien was clever. It took their combined strength to fully move the dumpster away, but they achieved it anyway. Through the large hole, they could see the market, and beyond that, the gates of the city. Serena informed her friend, nodding her head towards the city gates. Darien nodded sadly, not wanting her to leave. This time Serena did pick up on him, and she looked at him with shining blue eyes. Her small, soft hand grabbed for his, her fingers threading with the young boyıs digits and sending him warmth. In his minds eye, Darien saw her hand him a thin, crystalline thread. It was almost like the silk of a spiders web, thin and delicate, and he handled it carefully as he took him from her, afraid he would break it. he asked. he saw she held the other end with her own mind, Darien started to ask what a Œwhisper lineı was, but a loud mind voice was suddenly felt coming down the adjoining street. he cried, almost shoving the girl through the hole in the wall. Serena was already moving, scurrying out into the crowd and disappearing quickly, like a sweet dream. Darien shook his head, fighting back tears as he shoved with all his might to get the dumpster back in place. As the crunch of boots on sand was heard in the distance, Darien scampered down the alleyway and out of sight, praying he find his cadre before they left. ------ Serena was home free. In the distance she could see the RV her little family shared with the Mizunos, standing like a sanctuary, offering shelter from the confusion all around. She broke into a run, flinging the screen door open and parting her lisp to let out a triumphant whoop. The pain coming from the eleven figures gathered around the kitchen table stopped her dead in her tracks. One by one, Serena met the eyes of each of her beloved family. Aunt and Uncle Aino, Aunt Mizuno, her own mother, Sammy, Uncle Kino, Grandpa Hino, Chad, Raye, Mina, Lita, Amy, Aunt Osaka... fear gripped her heart like a steel vice when she realized that a pair of warm brown eyes were missing from the assembly. Slowly, like the first raindrops of a terrible monsoon, or the very first chords of a funeral dirge, Raye managed in a strangled mind voice;
