How dare you call me Meatball Head! My name is Serena. So use it!” a blonde-haired girl screeched at the top of her lungs, her crystal blue eyes glaring at a rather handsome young man. He was dressed in black slacks and a tight shirt of the same color. An ugly green jacket finished his simple attire. The blonde wore a blue and white school uniform. It resembled a sailor’s suit. Though on the surface, one might think she hated this man, deep down inside her, heart was beating at a hundred miles per hour. The man stared back calmly. His dark blue eyes showing no remorse. Parts of his bluish-black hair fell over his eyes. With a skillful swipe of his hand, he pushed it back. “And what if I don’t?” he asked the girl. Steam was practically shooting out of her ears by now. She was quite short and he seemed to tower over her. They were in front of the Crown Center arcade and this argument had been going on for quite some time. “ Why, I otta…” she said not being able to find the right words for the threat. ‘Oh, if only I could tell him how I felt,’ Serena thought. But quickly her brain scolded her. ‘No, he would only think you were stupid.’ “ You otta what?” Darien questioned as he leaned towards her face so that their noses almost touched. His eyes were challenging her to make a move. ‘Why is he so close? For a minute I thought he was about to kiss me. I could so easily wrap my arms around his neck and …’ Before Serena knew it, her arms did just that. They seemed to have gotten a mind of their own. She pulled his lips to hers and a surge of pleasure flowed through her. His lips tasted like sweet chocolate. Serena had no intention of breaking the kiss until she realized that he wasn’t responding. He stood still as if in a trance. Darien’s eyes were gazing intently at some unknown spot. She pushed him away quickly, stared at him for a few seconds and zoomed down the opposite direction, leaving a still shocked Darien behind. He shook his head. ‘What just happened?’ he asked himself. ‘ Did Meatball Head just kiss me? Why did she run away?’ Then determined to get these questions answered, he sped after a terrified Serena. Serena had come to a secluded area of the park. She slumped down on a bench gasping for air. With her palm, she smacked her head. ‘Why did I do that? Now I’ve totally embarrassed myself and things will never be the same. Oh what have I done? He didn’t even kiss me back. He just stood there as though he were stone,’ Serena thought as a sudden feeling of sadness settled upon her. Tears welled up in her eyes and slowly streamed down her face. The blonde buried her face in her arms and wept, not ever noticing that a mysterious figure was approaching her. She looked so fragile sitting there sobbing. Darien’s heart ached. He wanted to hold her and kiss her salty tears away. ‘Did I do this to her? Did I make her cry?’ Darien inquired to himself. He shortened the distance between himself and the huddled form. “Serena,” he whispered as he sat down next to her shaking body. “Please go away Darien. I really don’t need you to tease me about what I just did,” her muffled voice pleaded. “I’m not going to tease you. I just wanted to ask you why you kissed me.” Serena lifted her head, revealing her tear-stained cheeks. Darien gasped. Her eyes were clouded over and in complete despair. His heart began to crack. “I guess you have a right to know. I would hate it if someone kissed me and didn’t tell me why. It’s just that for the longest time, I’ve had this crush on you. I know I pretended to like Andrew, but I was just faking it. I was playing, you know, hard-to-get. I tried to push those feelings for you away, but they just kept on coming back, getting stronger every time. Then today, when you were so close to me, my senses went haywire and I couldn’t control myself. All I wanted to do was kiss you, and I did. But when I realized that you weren’t kissing me back, I knew I had made a big mistake. Now you probably think of me as a stupid junior high girl that has a crush on a sophisticated college guy like you.” Tears fell from her eyes as she said the last sentence. Serena looked away, so that Darien couldn’t see her crying. Inside, Darien’s heart was leaping for joy. How could she think that he would think she was stupid? He thought she was the most beautiful, kind, caring person on Earth. Darien couldn’t believe that she could have feelings for him. He always thought she hated his guts. A smile spread across his face. He reached out and put one large hand on both sides of her face. With his thumb he brushed her tears away. Serena gazed into his eyes and gasped. What she saw in them was not disgust or hatred, but love. “Serena, my Meatball Head, you have got it all wrong. When you kissed me today, I was so shocked because I would have never dreamed that this angel would kiss me. I lost all my control and couldn’t move. All I could see was you and me together forever. I’ve loved you since the first day I saw you even though I didn’t know it then. At first I didn’t like you because you had everything I didn’t. A family that loves you, friends that were always there for you. Then I realized that you had so much love in you. You were so caring and beautiful. That’s why everyone loved you, and that was when I knew that that was why I loved you too. You know how jealous I would get every time you flirted with Andrew? Now that I know …..” Before he could finish what he was saying, Serena’s lips were pressed against his. This time he responded whole-heartedly. After a few blissful minutes, Serena pulled away and looked up at Darien. “Do you really mean it, Darien? Do you really love me?” “I love you so much Serena that my heart aches when I’m not around you. Do you love me?” “Of course, you Silly Goose! I wouldn’t kiss you if I didn’t,” Serena giggled as she hugged Darien. “Silly Goose am I Meatball Head? You better run before I catch you.” At that warning, Serena sprinted away from Darien and down the dirt path. Darien let her go for a few minutes and then started chasing after her. It wasn’t very hard for him to catch her. His strong arms grasped the petite blonde’s stomach and pulled her against his warm body. She struggled and then relaxed, knowing that he had caught her. She twisted in his arms until they were facing each other. “Now what did you call me, Meatball Head?” “Nothing, Muffin.” “That’s better. Come here,” he commanded gently as he gave her a kiss. “Darien, isn’t it funny that an hour ago we were arguing and now we’re kissing?” “Uh-huh.” They sat together on a bench and watched the dying sun disappear behind some trees. Both felt so complete in each other’s arms and knew that this was their destiny. They belonged to each other.
