I'm not into action and all, so Sailor Moon the rest don't appear. Instead, it's centered around my fave couple. Hope you like! Let me know if you do! *Disclaimer: These characters aren't mine, so don't sue me! I have nothing worth suing for anyways. Also, the ideas involved in this story are mine, so please don't take it without permission! Thanks. My Heart's Desire Darien stood alone, looking down into the crystal clear waters of the fountain. The water bubbled over and frothed from its center spoutmerrily, spreading ripples and waves throughout the surface. Darien looked up into the sky and sighed. The moon shone brightly in the night sky, entrancing him with its beauty. As magical as the nightsky was, Darien felt unsatisfied...he was alone, once again. He turned back to the little fountain with its rippling waters. Herarely saw anyone else around this little spot. The fountain itself waseasily overlooked, and he had barely stumbled across it himself one day. As he stood, he thought once more about how lonely his life was. He had a good part-time job, he was a good student at the university, andhe had a close friend who he could tell anything to. And yet, something wasmissing. Deep in his thoughts, Darien suddenly realized that something had changed around him. The sound of the fountain's bubbling had stopped. Darien frowned. He had never known the fountain to stop flowing, even at night. As the ripples in the water died away, the surface grewcalm and clear. He leaned over, closer. For the first time, he could see below the surface, undisturbed by anything. A bronze plaque lay at the base of the central spout, slightly rustedand hidden by coins. Darien could almost make out the words... "'Know your heart's desire'," Darien read out loud. "What is myheart's desire?" Darien wondered. He closed his eyes, and opened his mind. Looking once more into the fountain, Darien suddenly saw a vision reflected in its waters. With the moon in the background, there was a stunning girl with golden hair and bright blue eyes that looked at him with such innocence andgoodness that it made him want to kneel in front of her. She made a beautifulpicture in the surface of the fountain's water, and Darien stared, entranced. She looked so real... He turned around, to see if she was actually there, behind him, which would explain her reflection in the water. No one. Disappointed, he turned around back to the surface of the water, onlyto find that the fountain had begun flowing again, taking away the tranquility of the surface before. Instead of feeling lonely again, Darien felt a burst of light in hisheart. He knew now, what his heart's desire was. This wonderful girl, who hadsuch an amazing glow about her. She was his destiny. And there was nothing he wouldn't do to be with her. He smiled as he walked away from the fountain, which was merrily bubbling along. [A few weeks later] Darien could not remember a time that his life had dragged on so slowly. He was sitting atop a stool at the arcade center at his regular time, passing the minutes by making aimless chitchat with Andrew while hewaited for a girl with golden meatballs and a golden heart to arrive. Waitingfor her smile, the way her eyes sparkled, her shining golden hair...Darien had memorized every aspect of her. All aspects that he knew, at least. She was a million times better in person than the vision he had seen in thefountain. She was what he had been dreaming of his entire life. And she was a real person. She had some really funny quirks about her too, that made her all the more endearing. He knew that she loved toeat. No one could compare to the way she ate. Actually, in Darien's opinion,no one could compare to her at all. He loved the way that she was a klutz, because that gave him more opportunities to try and catch her if she tripped. Shehad such a caring way about her, filled with laughter and enjoyment of life. Sheloved eating ice cream, she loved shopping with her friends, and she lovedplaying the Sailor V game. However, her attitude always turned frosty when shedealt with Darien. Darien, in shock at meeting her for the first time, had not exactly been at his most charming self. 'What was I supposed to say? I saw you in a fountain and I've been waiting for you my entire life? And by the way, I love you?' Darientried to make excuses for himself. But it was all true. Ever since he had met the desire of his heart in real life...he had completely lost it. Even the minor, insipid encounters with Serena Darien treasured. Even if it was to tease her and call her "Meatball Head", he knew it wasbetter to maintain a more casual attitude rather than reveal any of his truefeelings. No doubt, they'd overwhelm Serena and he would lose the little momentsthey had to discomfort and tension. He would have to wait. After all, she already had a boyfriend. There was a continual heaviness over his heart as Darien had watched Serena and her antics. It hadn't been there before he knew about herboyfriend, of course. He remembered being jealous of Andrew because there wasalways such a bright light in her eyes when she talked to him. His jealousyhad switched from Andrew to "David" when he overheard one of the girls who Serena always hung around with call out to her teasingly one day, "Hey,Serena! Hear from your boyfriend today?" And Darien had turned his head tostare at Serena, whose eyes locked with his for a moment. She abruptly turnedher head away, but not before she had blushed revealingly. Which, of course, told his already suffering heart all he needed to know. Well, almost. With a few seemingly casual questions, Darien had brought up the topic with Andrew several days after that momentousoccasion. Andrew, pretending not to have noticed Darien's more than naturalinterest in Serena, went along with him. He knew not to push Darien on the topicof Serena, and feigned ignorance of the clear facts that told him Serenahad Darien wrapped around her little finger. Too bad she hadn't a clue of it. Unlike Serena, he had noticed how Darien had always followed Serena's movements, wherever she was, and seemed to gaze at her with a kind of hunger. No matter what it was that she was doing, from yelling at him (which Darien seemed to enjoy immensely) to scarfing down doughnuts (which he also seemed to enjoy, strangely enough), his eyes showed more life when she was in thevicinity, and they seemed to darken to an impossibly deep blue when she wasn't there. Serena's boyfriend was apparently some guy who she had known at her junior high school. Although he had moved away several weeks ago, theykept in touch through frequent letters and phone calls. The guy, or David,or whoever, wanted to try a long-distance relationship. 'Selfish pig,'Darien had first thought when he heard about it. 'Tying down Serena when she'syoung and should be free...and able to date other people...' And a voice insideDarien's head laughed and said, 'He's only doing what you would do in hisplace...making sure she never gets away from you...' Darien's mood went from bad toworse. And, not helping the matter, were the constant sighs and giggles ofenvy he overheard from Serena's friends as they begged her for more details onher relationship. And, lucky for him, right after he had found out this information, Serena had bounced in. Angry at her, and mad at himself for fallingfor an impossible girl like her, Darien had lashed out at her. After she stormed off in a raging mood, Darien knocked his head against the counter, thinking thathe must be the biggest idiot in the world. Even if she didn't have a boyfriend, she would never look at him twice now. 'Stupid fountain,' he thought. 'If onlyit hadn't shown me what I can never have...' That was a lie, he knew. Thefountain had merely shown him what he had been dreaming of; he knew that he would've fallen head over heels for Serena no matter what. At the moment Darien impatiently tapped the counter. 'Where is she?' The door jingled in answer to his unspoken question, and Serena walked in with uncharacteristic calmness. Darien twisted his chair around and started with his usual remark, saying, "Hey, Meatball Head. Fail another test today?" Serena shot him an icy glare. She wasn't amused. However, this time, she failed to respond and she stalked to the stool farthest from himand plopped down, head in her hands. Darien frowned, some unknown emotion tugging at his heart. He got up and took the seat next to her. "Go away, Darien. I don't want to deal with you today." A muffled voice came from the golden haired blob. "Hey Serena, be happy," knowing it sounded stupid as he said it. He just wanted to see her smile. Serena thought to herself, 'That's the strangest thing I've heard himsay yet. Is he kidding me?' A bolt of inspiration struck Darien. "Hey, how 'bout I treat you to a sundae?" Serena's head popped up and she gave him a wary look. Her eyes were open wide as she wondered why he was being so nice all of a sudden. However, the lure of ice cream was too much for her and her eyes brightened, unable to resist. Darien smiled. 'She's so cute when she smiles!' He quickly ordered the sundae and watched her inhale it. Serena focused on the sundae, grinning happily between bites. 'I've never seen anyone enjoy ice cream so thoroughly.' "Slow down, Meatball Head. You'll be the only girl to ever die of ice cream headache arrest." Serena lifted her eyes from the ice cream to him and glared, this time without the ice. "Just when I thought you were okay, Darien..." Darien decided to ignore the pang in his heart. "So what's the matter, Serena? I've never seen such worry on your face; not even when you have to face a math test." Serena half-heartedly made a face at him. "Well, if you must know, my boyfriend David is coming to visit me. I haven't seen him in a monthand I'm worried." Darien could feel his heart turn to slush. She really had a way of disrupting his day. Serena continued. "I guess it's kind of silly, but I'm reallyworried. What if he doesn't love me anymore? What if he doesn't feel the sameway about me?" Darien noticed that she didn't question whether her own feelings forher boyfriend had changed. His heart felt like a dead weight. "Serena, what guy could resist loving you?" Immediately, Darien wanted to smack himself. 'Just let her know how you feel, you idiot!' Serena snorted, clearly skeptical of his opinion, and didn't noticehis sigh of relief. "Plenty. You, for instance. Besides, Darien, what doyou know about being in love?" Another twist of the knife. How ironic. Darien replied, with difficulty, "You may be surprised, MeatballHead." Serena looked at him with interest, hearing the thick emotion in his voice. She immediately regretted what she had said. "Oh, Darien, I'm sorry. Who is she? What's the matter with her? You're really not so bad when you're not calling poor girls names andinsulting them within an inch of their lives." Serena's teasing voice lulled Darien from his stupor. He chuckled. "It's just that she's in love with someone else." Serena's eyes widened. 'Who is this mystery girl? She's brought the mighty Darien to his knees! I should pick up a few tips...' Glancingaround, Serena spotted the clock and realized she was late again. "Well, Darien, I'm sorry but I've gotta go. Whoever that girl is, she must be a nutcase not to fall for you, even if you are a jerk. Iadmit, you occasionally have your good points. Thanks for the sundae!" Serenarushed past him, giving him a light kiss on the cheek, and before he could react she had dashed out the door, leaving it jangling behind her. "A nutcase, eh? More like a Meatball Head," Darien muttered out loud. Darien was sitting at the arcade counter, worried as usual. The painhe felt at knowing that Serena was in love with another...knowing thisfrom her own mouth...it was eating away at his insides. The hurt glimmered inhis eyes, and he stared at the counter, seemingly fascinated by the shiny whitetiles. The door jingled, and Darien didn't have to turn his head to know that Serena had arrived. With him. He could see her in his mind's eye. She was wearing a sky-blue sundress with yellow sunflowers scattered across the print. However, the dress faded in comparison to her shining hair, more lustrous today, and thesparkle in her bright blue eyes. He knew that she would be holding his hand, and he felt jealousy tryto claw its way out. If Darien was as lucky to be by her side...he wouldplace his arm around her waist...letting the whole world know that she belongedto him, and he belonged to her. Whoever this guy was, he didn't deserve Serena's love as much as Darien did. 'Great,' Darien thought. 'Now I've turned Serena and her love into a commodity to be fought over.' It wasn't his place to criticize Serena's boyfriend, or whoever's hand she chose to hold. But he couldn't completely defeatthe feeling of possessiveness inside him. He decided to not look inSerena's direction. The light in her eyes would kill him with the knowledgethat it was for someone else, never him. While Darien was obsessing unhealthily, Serena's eyes flickered with an expression of boredom. She stubbornly tried to hide it with apolite smile. For some reason, David was not as fascinating as he had been two monthsago. Was it the fact that they rarely saw each other anymore, andcommunicated only through letters and phone calls? 'No, that wasn't it,' Serena decided. David was the exact same guythat she remembered. He was romantic, charming, and sweet. So why couldn't Serena focus on what he was saying? And why wasn't a certain annoying figure in a distinctive green jacket not even glancing in her direction? Disgusted with herself and not even knowing why, Serena abruptly got up and grabbed David's hand while he was in the midst of talking abouthis preparations for entrance exams. Dragging him over to where Darien sat, talking to Andrew, she brisklysaid, "Darien, Andrew, I want you to meet David. David, these are two goodfriends of mine." Darien turned to slowly assess his competition. 'Wait...competition? What am I thinking? I'm not even in the running; this guy's alreadywon!' While Andrew grinned at Serena's "friend", Darien locked his dark- blue eyes on David. He was surprised to see a dark-haired guy withbrown eyes that stared at him warily. He held himself in a self-assured way, andDarien gave his opponent an amount of grudging respect. Still, for some reason, Darien didn't like him. 'Some reason? Darien, you idiot, you know what the reason is! A jumpy blond meatball head whom you can't keep your eyes off of!' Darien moved his gaze from David to Serena, and his eyes stayed there. The flushed look on her face made her look prettier than ever. Unableto drag his eyes from her, Darien could feel David's gaze turn analytical. Herealized that he had probably given himself away, but he knew that Davidwouldn't say anything and Serena wouldn't believe it anyway. "Serena, are you and David going to the charity dance in the park tonight?" Andrew asked, making polite conversation. Serena brightened. "Yup, I can't wait! The dance is supposed to be simple, as everything's been donated, but the money from the ticket sales will go toward the children's ward at the hospital. Isn't that great?" David smiled down at her. Darien nodded at her, and unable to stand much more of the torture, he suddenly got up and left the arcade. Outside, he breathed out heavilyand felt more alone than ever. Inside, David glanced at Serena, who looked puzzled at Darien's disappearance. She was more special than any of his other girlfriendsin the past, but still...she was just a girl. If she was interested in this other guy...male pride, however, made him determined not to give up without a fight. [That night] The night was lit up with the bright colorful lanterns strung on the border of the park area sectioned off for the dance. The area was already filled with excited young couples dancing on the floor. Darien, leaning against a tree and hidden underneath its shadow, noted enviously the arrival of Serena on David's arm. He felt that somethingin the universe had gone awfully awry. She looked content enough, but that extra sparkle in her energeticself seemed to be missing. Darien missed it. He often went to greatlengths to rile her to see that grow in her face. Serena tried to look casual as she scanned the area. If she would've admitted it to herself, she would've realized that she was looking for Darien. For some unknown reason, when she had finished looking around and hadn'tseen his familiar figure, she felt disappointment and exasperation towardsDavid. After agreeing to dance with David, she saw her friend Amy dancing shyly with Greg. Serena beamed in delight, her mood suddenly better. She, Mina, Raye, and Lita had been scheming forever to get those twotogether. Underneath the darkness of the tree, Darien still hadn't budged. His eyes followed Serena to the dance floor, and although his mood becamelighter when he saw her smile brightly, his stomach churned as he rememberedwhy...or who she was smiling at. He felt inexplicable anger come over him at seeing David's arm slim around Serena's slim waist. Jealousy practically crippled him as all he could feel was the desire to pummel Serena's so-called boyfriend into the ground. That would be an ending to this night that he possibly hadn't expected. 'Why can't it be me out there holding Serena in my arms?' Darien wondered in a sudden burst of despair. 'Oh yeah. Because she hates me. And would never give me a second glance...damn fountain.' But he didn't mean it. With or without the fountain, he would've fallen for Serena no matter what. The thought made him more bitter, but then all reason and logic flewas he saw Serena's date leave her at the refreshment table. "Carpe diem," Darien told himself wryly as he headed in her direction. 'Am I still in love with David? Was I ever?' Serena wondered toherself as she munched on a cookie thoughtfully. 'I don't know what's changed...he seems the same, but I'm just not happy to be around him anymore. And why is that? My mind always seemsto wander...' Serena reflected on herself. 'Maybe it wasn't David...just wanting to have a boyfriend.' Serena frowned at herself, displeased to find thatshe was sillier than she had thought she was. 'So what changed in the past fewweeks? Was it...could it possibly be...because I met...' "Darien!" "Hey, Meatball Head!" Darien adopted a casual manner to hide the conflict within. Up close, he admired the pretty picture that Serenamade, cookie in one hand and punch in the other. As for Serena, she was so shocked to see Darien that she didn't even make a fuss over the name he called her. He looked good, dressed up ina semi- formal shirt and dark pants. His dark-blue eyes burned into her withan intense gaze. "Want to dance?" he said, as slightly as possible to offset the breakneck beating of his heart. Serena was shocked again. This was Darien, asking her to dance with him? She glanced around, and noted that David still hadn't returnedwith her jacket. She shrugged and said, "Why not?" as she took Darien's hand tothe dance floor. Darien let out a sign of relief. Swaying slowly to the music, Serena felt peaceful and...comfortable in Darien's arms. She wondered why she didn't feel like this with David. Darien, his arms holding Serena close, wondered how Serena felt. Was he reading too much into this? 'Stupid, Darien! She already has aboyfriend!' A thought occurred to Serena. Darien had mentioned that he was in love...he would know how to tell. Something in the back of her headnagged at her at the reminder that he was in love with another girl, but she abruptly shoved it down. "Darien...how do you know if you're in love?" Serena asked innocently. Darien suddenly lost his voice. Why was she asking him this? She didn't know about his feelings, did she? He felt a sudden stab of fearthat she would laugh at him if she realized how he felt about her. "Uh...er..." Darien stammered. Serena looked up at him. First, Darien asked her to dance, and now he was at a loss for words. 'Strange night!' "In love with who...Serena?" Darien asked, trying to keep his voice calm. "With...David, of course. You must know more about love and stuff...you're older than me, and all..." Thud. Darien could feel his heart stop beating and drop to the floor. At least he was spared her stomping on it as well. Darien pushed his thoughts aside...he had to tell her something. "Well, Serena...when you're in love with someone, you want to be with them always. Seeing them makes your day a little brighter..." Darien unconsciously drew on the feelings he held for Serena. "Their very smile lights up your life, and when you say goodbye you can hardly wait until you see them again...The person you love is...like a friend that you're comfortable with...but they're very, very special. "You know all of their faults but you wouldn't love this person ifthey weren't a bit...silly...or...or a crybaby...because you accept their faults as you accept the best parts...of which there are always so many..." Darien placed a hand under Serena's chin, and made her look up at him. Her bright-blue eyes had widened, and her lips had parted in surprise. Darien forced himself to go on. "You don't love a person because they're beautiful. It's becauseyou're in love with them that they appear more beautiful than anyone else inthe world." Darien's voice dropped to a husky note. He had forgotteneverything around them now, forgotten Serena's stupid boyfriend, the dance...onlythe girl before him had any meaning to him. "And you can't help yourself...you might not want to be in love, butyou can't win this fight inside your heart. You can't stop it, and you don't even want to. This person...is the most important reason for existence...you'd do anything just to be near them." Serena started to drown in the depths of Darien's intense gaze...so close. His voice was so soothing...hypnotic, pulling her in. "Love makes you do funny things, Serena. It's confusing, and sometimes by the time you figure it out, it's too late. Love makes youafraid sometimes, so that you don't wan to reveal your heart...in case the oneyou love doesn't love you back. Sometimes, you're so afraid that you pretendthat you don't care, when you really, really do..." Darien trailed off...all thoughts fled from his head...Serena was staring at him, returning his intense gaze...they were so close...so close... "Serena! I'm back!" They jumped apart, and Darien swore under his breath. Serena backed away, a guilty flush on her cheek. Her mind was going overtime now. Had Darien been about to...kiss her? The way that he talked...was hetalking about her? 'No,' she chided herself. 'He's in love with another...' A heaviness settled over her heart. Of course, that's who he was talking about. That'swhy he sounded so sincere...he was talking about her. She gave Darien a smile. "She must be an incredible girl for you totalk so..." David frowned, watching. Darien's heart was screaming, 'No, no! I was talking about you...But maybe she doesn't want my love...' Darien gave her a smile in return, and waved goodbye. Serena looked after him wistfully. Unknown to both of them, David really hadn't needed that much time to get Serena's jacket from the car. He had returned to see his girlfriend dancing awfully close with her "friend" from the arcade, a bedazzled look onher face. Wondering why she never looked at him that way, he opted to watch them together. He concluded that Darien was in love with Serena...in a painfully obvious way noticeable to everyone but Serena. Which brought him tothe question: was Serena in love with Darien? It could be just that her head was being turned by this guy...David wasn't sure. In the time that he had known her, Serena had brightened up his life considerably. But he was very practical. He didn't doubt that he could live without her. However, he wasn't going to give her up without a fight. Besides, he still hadn't ascertained Serena's feelings for himself. In the timethey had dated, she had always been rather vague. He hadn't pushed her, notwanting to hear an answer until she was ready. Now, he had to know. "Serena, here's your jacket," David said. "Er...thanks, David, that's very sweet of you. Want to dance? Or are you hungry? C'mon, we don't have much time left!" She grabbed hishand and pulled him onto the dance floor, chattering frantically and makingDavid unable to get a word in for he rest of the night. [Next afternoon] "Uf! Serena!" "Sorry, David! Hurry up, we're going to be late!" Serena bounced along the path to the picnic area, where her friends were supposed tobe waiting for her and David. "Meatball Head! Late again!" Raye sat on a large blanket next to Mina. Serena stuck out her tongue at Raye as David watched, amused. Before the tongue war could escalate, David pulled Serena to him and kissedher. As soon as he released her, Serena blushed, amid the whistles and catcalls of her friends. David smiled down at her. Serena averted her gaze, not wanting David to see that...she hadn't really enjoyed the kiss. For some reason, she wasn't comfortableacting like a couple with him anymore. Giggling, Mina scooted over on the blanket to make room for them. "David, Chad and Ken are torturing Greg with sports talk over there. This is strictly a girl talk session for now...say goodbye to Serena," Mina said mischievously, a glint in her eye. "Hey Serena, spill the beans," Raye said, once David was out of earshot. "Hmm?" Serena focused on the food containers that Lita had brought. "You know what we're talking about...everyone saw you and Darien dancing together last night...a little too close, don't you think?" Mina grinned. Lita chimed in. "Yup, you guys were staring at each other like there was no tomorrow...and you already have a boyfriend, too! Leave somefor the rest of us!" Serena frowned. "What are you talking about?" Raye snorted. "C'mon, Serena, you can't possibly NOT know what we're referring to. Is there something going on between you andDarien?" Serena turned red. "Ummm..." Amy smiled. "She's blushing..." Mina whistled. "Two guys in the palm of her hand...so who is it that you want, Serena? Cuz I think David is kinda cute..." Serena stood up. Her own thoughts were too jumbled up, so how could she explain them to her friends? "Excuse me guys, I have to...um, get some fresh air. I'll be right back." The others looked at each other as Serena left the picnic area. "Fresh air? Where does she think she is right now?" Serena breathed a sigh of relief as she slipped from the view of her friends. She spotted a clearing and decided to sit down for a fewminutes to think of what to say when she went back. "David...Darien...it's too confusing!" And that's when Serena saw the little fountain. It was a cute, circular fountain that shot water out from its center spout, happily makingwaves in the small structure. Gazing at it fondly, Serena smiled. It was very peaceful, thisfountain... And that's when the water stopped flowing. Frowning, Serena leaned forward. Why did it stop? As the ripples died down, the surface of the water smoothed out sothat she could see clearly below it words engraved in a plaque that wouldn'tnormally be noticeable. "'Know your heart's desire'," she read. "I was just wondering that...what is my heart's desire? Who is it?" She closed her eyes, deep in thought. When she opened them again, she saw in the surface of the water, instead of her ownreflection...that of...Darien... Unable to take her eyes off the picture, she gazed at the featuresthat she knew so well. The strong lines of his face, the magnetic blue eyes that drew her in with an attraction to his mysterious air that was only enhanced by the dark hair that framed his face. It was so real, that Serena couldn't resist turning around to look forDarien. Of course, he wasn't there. Disappointed, she turned back to the fountain, only to find that ithad begun flowing regularly again. But it had already given her the answershe needed. "Serena! What have you been doing?" Serena walked closer to her friends, not sitting down. "Well...it'skind of like this...I've been thinking a lot...and it's been confusing..." Raye cut her off. "Just spill it, Meatball Head! We're in the darkhere!" Serena glared at her. "Well, I've just been thinking about who's theone that I really want to be with. And it may surprise you, or it may not...but when I was on my walk, it kinda just came to me..." "I'm not the one, am I, Serena?" David's quiet voice interrupted her ramblings, and sadness filled Serena. She hadn't wanted to hurt anyone. She turned around slowly to face her...former boyfriend. "I'm sorry, David." She walked towards him and gave him a kiss on the cheek with apologetic eyes. David smiled. "It'll be all right, Serena." His eyes told her thathe was going to be okay, giving her comfort. "Go find him, Serena," hewhispered. A brilliant smile lit up Serena's face as she ran off, leaving herfriends staring after her. Mina cleared her throat. "So, David, do you have any other plans before you have to leave again?" As Serena ran out of the park, Darien's words echoed through her head. "You want to be with them always...seeing them makes your day brighter...when you say goodbye, you can hardly wait to see themagain." 'It's always been Darien,' Serena thought. 'All that teasing andjoking around...ever since I met him, I couldn't stop thinking about him. Ithought I was annoyed by him...but I was in love with him the whole time...and Ididn't even think about it...because I thought I was in love withDavid...idiot that I was...because I don't feel the same way about him that I do aboutDarien..." A shock of fear hit Serena. "Sometimes by the time you figure it out, it's too late..." Was it really too late? Did she have no chance compared to this other girl? 'Oh no,' Serena groaned. 'That other girl...she's so special tohim.' Serena's run slowed to a walk as she became more nervous. What if he laughed at her? What if he only cared for her as a sister? And who the hell was that other girl? Serena made her way to Darien's apartment easily, having heard it when Darien was giving Andrew directions for a study session with someof their friends. At the entrance, Serena nervously walked in and took the elevator up to Darien's floor. As she stepped out, another panic attack seized Serena. When the doors closed behind her, all of the courage drained out of her body andshe felt very, very afraid. She turned around, frantically pressing the "Down"button. Unfortunately, the ancient elevator had already left and she would have to wait. As she stood waiting, she hugged herself with her arms. She couldn't do this...face Darien, not when she had just figured out that she... "Meatball Head?" Serena jumped, and would've ran smack into the still closed elevator doors if strong hands hadn't gripped her arms and turned her around to face him. "Er...Hello, Darien, nice to see you...going down?" Serena smiled brightly as Darien gave her an odd look. "Umm...Serena, what are you doing here?" "Taking the elevator, of course! See, I already pressed the down button, but this darn thing takes so long, you know...but of course youknow that, I mean you live here! How do you live with it? Do you have to allot extra time when you leave because the elevator takes so long?" Serena continued to babble as she gesticulated wildly. Darien's brain started working overtime with all of the possibilitiesshe might be here. He refused to let himself hope that she was herebecause she wanted to see him. "Well, what I meant was, why aren't you out with your boyfriend?" Darien couldn't keep the bitterness from his voice when saying thoselast two words. A ray of hope shone into Serena's heart. He sounded jealous...kindof. Did that mean he was interested in her? He had almost kissed her! Orhad he? Serena felt a headache coming on. The afternoon had been too much forher. "Serena?" Darien questioned. "Did something happen with David?" Please, please... "Uh, well," Serena fidgeted. 'Oh, what the hell.' "We kinda broke up and so I came here but now I have to go---oh, gosh, the elevator isslow---ya know what, I need some exercise, I'll take the stairs---" Serena made a mad dash to the stairs but Darien's reflexes were quick; he grabbed her and pulled her close to him. 'Did she just say what I think she said? I'm not letting her go now,not after this much time!' "Darien, let me go!" Serena attempted to struggle, a futile attempt against Darien's strong grip. "Serena...what aren't you telling me?" Darien looked down into her agitated, but beautiful blue eyes. Serena stared back at Darien, and she couldn't help but say the wordsin her heart. "I...I love you, Darien." Darien couldn't believe his ears. Serena, his angel, his vision, loved him? He was astonished...and a thrill ran through his heart. As Darien stood, speechless, Serena felt despair grow in her heart athis lack of reaction. He must not love her, or he would say something. 'It must've been someone else after all.' Her eyes started to brim with tears, and she turned her face from his. "Serena..." Darien tilted her face towards his. "Darling, why areyou crying? I'm so happy I can barely find the words to tell you how muchyou mean to me." Darien wiped a stray tear away as he caressed her cheek. Serena gave a tentative smile. "I mean something to you?" Darien nodded...trying to find the words to tell her how much. He chose the simplest way. "Serena, I love you. It's always been you." "Oh, Darien." Serena flung her arms around his neck as he pulled her in for a kiss. After long moments had passed and they were forced to come up for air, Darien asked Serena, "What made you realize that you loved me?" Serena blushed. "It's kind of strange...I was just outside wonderingto myself, what was my heart's desire? And then---" "And you saw a reflection...in a fountain..." Darien grinned at her, seeing realization in her eyes. And then, he kissed her again. *Bing* The elevator doors opened and a gray haired couple stared in shock at the engrossed pair. "Going down?" the old man asked nervously. The two broke apart for an instant as Darien flashed a grin and turned his head to say, "We're staying right here...together." The last thing the two in the elevator saw as the doors closed was Darien's dark head lowering to Serena's golden one. *********************** There it is!
