Sung By Surface LESSON TO LEARNBY: JLALA (jlynpinay@aol.com) Chapter Two: Darien Dancing? Please Tell Me You're Joking! ~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~~~*~~~~ "ARE YOU INSANE?!" Darien yelled. "HOW CAN YOU SIGN ME UP?!" Him dancing? He didn't even like to strut down the street. The very thought of him dancing made him sick. He sat back down. "How can I even come close to impressing her? She'll think I'm an idiot" A sad look came on his face. There was no hope, once she saw how bad he was she'd run screaming from the building. "HELLO?! That's why we're going to the class!" Mina said and smacked him upside the head. "A little common sense here PLEASE" "Give it a try, for Serena", Raye said. He thought about her beautiful face and sad eyes. Just to be close to her even if he had to make an ass of himself, it was worth it. All for her, everything for her. He looked up at them."Well then, let's go dancing", he said. ***************************************************************** "I knew I'd like this class", Andrew said and eyed his girlfriend. Mina wore a tight pair of leggings and a white tank top. "So will this be your everyday outfit?" "If you want it to be", she said suggestively. Wrapping her arms his neck she kissed him lightly. "Remember we're here for Darien" They look at Darien who sat on a bench looking horribly NERVOUS. Andrew sat next to him. "So you think you could handle this?", Andrew said and looked at friend. "I can't believe how stuck you are on this girl" "Look who's talking", he responded laughingly. Darien's smile faded when he saw a familiar middle aged man enter the room. His balding head shone and his clean-cut mustache hid the smirk on his face. He reeked of snobiness. Sitting next to Darien and Andrew they watched him examined the room. Actually he was staring at the girls as they did their stretches. It was him, the man who danced with Serena. Another person entered the room, a small woman with graying hair in a soft bun. Her dark eyes were kindly and a dimple deepened as she smiled atthem. "I'm Miss Yoshio. Your teacher for today." she said to them. "Where's Serena?" Amy asked and joined Greg's side. He looked at her in her plain blue leotard and turned quickly before she realized he was staring. "She had a previous appointment to keep but next week she'll be taking over", Miss Yoshio explained then bowed to the man sitting on the bench. "Serena will be coming out soon, Mr.Sui" The man nodded in anticipation when she entered. Everything stopped and everyone turned to see the pretty girl. She wore a tight bodysuit and a long flowing skirt with a pair of sandals. Her hair was in a pair of "odangoes" and her serious eyes looked at them. They shone with a pleased light but faded when her eyes met Mr.Sui, Andrew looked to see Darien watching her. Love in his eyes and he couldn't blame his friend. Serena was a beautiful girl. There was something special to her but an aura of sadness hung around her like curtains. "Mr.Sui", she said and he got up quickly. His eyes scanned her ravenously and Mina thought she saw her cringe. Hell she was cringing herself. The guy had a JERK stamped to his forehead. They walked to the far side of the studio and Mr.Sui quickly wrapped his arm around her waist. "Okay everyone let's get started", Miss Yoshio said. "Okay I want everyone to follow me." They all gathered around. "Right foot back, Left forward, joined the two feet and slide to your left. Repeat, right foot..." Darien couldn't help but not pay attention. He watched her glide around the room with the man, her eyes blank trying to not to pay any attention to Mr.Sui. "Darien, would you like to join us?" Miss Yoshio looked at him with a twinkle in her eye. Had she caught him staring? "Okay start, right foot back, left forward, join and slide" So was that right or left foot first? Only two minutes into it and he already looked like a jackass. "Is it only me or does everyone suck at this?", he said to himself. He shouldn't have looked up. To his surprise, everyone was dancing and not to mention they were doing a hell of job doing it. Okay so it was only him. "Relax", The teacher said and put his hand on her waist. "Just follow me. One, two, three. One, two, three..." With Miss Yoshio's patient teaching, he got the steps in a few minutes which enable him to watch Serena. "I can't believe I'm actually getting this!" he said until he step on her foot. Sheepishly he tried the steps again but ended up on the wrong foot and after that he managed to step on her foot AGAIN. How she could stand with a swollen foot, he'd never know. "Sorry" "Darien, you have to distract yourself. Think of something else besides the steps. Think of the music, or just concentrate on some- thing in the room or maybe SOMEONE in the room" He blushed hotly. They began again. As he watched Serena whirl around the room, he looked at her deep blue eyes that looked blank as she tried not to look at man holding her. How beautiful she was. There was no one like her. Gazing at her with adoration, Miss Yoshio spoke in his ear. "She despises him you know. He had millions of dollars and could have any other teacher but he chose her because he's sees what you see. What we all see in her. Serena's special but Darien she's had a hard time and pass the beauty you'll see something different" As they whirled around, he watched her mesmirized, her face, her eyes- WHAM! Maybe while he was staring he should have watched for that pole that kept the ceiling up.And down he went. "Oh my God", Raye said and rushed to her friend. Andrew ran over tohim. Miss Yoshio and Serena tried to revive him while the others stoodaside. "Well at least he got her attention", Ken said to Lita as they watched. "I'll say!" she responded. ************************************************************************ So he ran into a pole and passed out in front of a bunch of people but this had to be the most HUMILIATING thing to ever happen to him. "How does someone run into a pole?", Serena asked as she put the cloth over his head. Dear God, he wanted to crawl in a hole and DIE. At least he wouldn't have to face up to her. "I was just concentrating on the steps", he said. He had to be theworse dancer on earth. "I've seen ungraceful but you suck!" Serena said and suddenly put a hand on her mouth. "I'm SO sorry" "No it's alright", he said laughingly and she joined in but stopped aruptedly. "Besides you have the funniest hair, I've ever come across" She took the cloth, soaking it, and then sat next to where he laidreplacing it. "Well it's good to know I'm special", she said with a serious look. She patted his head with the cloth. She didn't think that she'd ever saw such dark eyes but they were nice on him. Serena quickly shook the thought out of her head. As she got up Darien grabbed her wrist and their eyes met."YOU are special", he whispered. ************************************************************************ As they closed up the studio, Serena took the curtains ready to closed them when something caught her eye. Someone was across the street dancing in a small gazebo. It was Darien that boy from the class. What was he doing? He was practicing. She watched him go over the steps, her face in lovely solemness. But there something about him that made her want to smile. A real smile. Not the half-hearted ones she usually gave. Miss Yoshio joined her at the window. "Darien is a good boy", she said. "He'd make someone very happy" Serena gave her teacher a smile and began to close the curtains. But not before one more glance. ************************************************************************ He was actually getting it, slowly but surely he was getting it. They had had two lessons last week. Darien had practiced in a nearby gazebo everyday and everytime he felt like pulling his hair out, he'd look at the dance studio's huge window and he would always see her. She never knew that he was watching. Darien thought back to the night when he had saw her gazing out the window and in her eyes, the same sad look he had always seen her with. Like when he had told she was special. Her eyes had close off any emotion and she had turned away. He should have forgotten about her then, she was too special for him. A guy with his own secret past. But looking at her again like he was now from the same stairs he had first seen her, Darien loved her more than ever. With passion and adoration than ever before. Nothing would change that. She was dancing again and he saw the sad slow steps she took. He sighed and got moving. Groaning inwardly he knew that everyone especially Andrew would think he was flaking out. But after his fiasco, he understood why they'd think that. "Well if it isn't Chief Long Pole himself", Andrew joked as he walkedin. "Haha Andrew", he said to his friend. "Don't listen to him Darien, he almost broke my toe yesterday", Mina said and laughed when her boyfriend scowled at him. "So are you nervous? After all Serena's teaching the class and well you could either sweep her off her feet or CHOKE" "Thanks for the encouragement Mina", Darien said. "I'm surprised you came", Serena said from behind him. He turnedquickly to see her in a rose bodysuit and white skirt. Her face held an amused look and her blue eyes glittered. "After a concussion I didn't think you'd show your face" "I'm always up for a challenge", he responded and their eyes flashed at each other. It was a battle of wits. She put her face close to his and he could practically smell the sweet perfume behind her ears. "Well this time watch for the poles", Serena whispered in his ear. Quickly she turned, her long hair whipping him in the face. "Everyone ready?" They all nodded and she walked up to each pair. "Don't people usually put their hand on their partner's HIP?" Mina reddened and quickly put his hand in the proper place. She walked on to Raye and Chad. Raye was obviously annoyed; somehow Chad always found a way to piss her off. Serena took their hands and placed them together, then push the two together. She looked at them with a teasing smile. "It's okay to hold hands, when you dance with someone, you put what you feel inside into it." Serena winked at Chad who was looking at Raye with an obviously smittened face. Lita and Ken were fine but Amy and Greg who happened to be very shy blushed all over when Serena pushed closer together. Making their bodies press again each other. That left Darien. "Ready to show them what you can do?", she asked him. He nodded and looked down as he put a hand to her hip. Usagi's face was flushed but then he saw that her face was expressionless, she had once again closed off anything that would give away her feelings. She looked at him. "Tighter" Hesitantly he tightened his hold on her and her sweet scent caught his nose. If he fell flat on his face, he would find a way to bury himself. The steps were complicated. Was it right out or left? "OW!" He just stepped on her foot. Way to go Darien. She looked at him square in the eye. "You're nervous, aren't you?" "What makes you say that?" he asked. "Your hand is on my BUTT", she whispered in his ear. Darien's eyes went wide and quickly moved his hand from her bottom. Serena smothered the giggle that threatened to rise from her throat. It had been a long time since she had laughed. Her face was serious and a somewhat scared look was in her eyes. "I'm SO sorry", he said and before he could beg for her forgiveness again. She walked away to help the others. Darien sat down and buried his face in his hands. He'd never get to her. ********************************************************************* "Left foot out, right foot back, half turn and repeat", He said to himself. It was always easy to practice in the gazebo, where he could see her dance, she inspired him. Alone he danced the steps fine but around her it was all wrong. Just looking up at the window which was dark he saw her face. She hated him, his friends told she didn't butshe did. "Darien?" Serena said surprising him. "Do you always practice here?" She knew he did but she did not want him to know she watched him sometimes. It wasn't right, she shouldn't have but she couldn't helpit. "Sometimes", he said to her. "I just wanted to thank you for teaching us, I'm sure we're taking a lot of time from you. You must miss yourfriends" "I don't have a lot of friends, in fact I don't have any", she said quiet pain. "You have all of us", he said. "Raye, Lita, Mina and Amy adore you. I adore you" Darien turned his eyes away and missed the brief light in Serena's eyes. She gazed up at him with tears in her eyes. Why wasshe crying? "Why did you sign up for my class?", she asked harshly. "If it's because of me I assure you, you're getting nowhere, I suggest you leave the class" She whipped around and walked away quickly leaving Darien. Without knowing the hot tears had began to fall from her face. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I know, one word: BORING!
