Title: Serena and Darien: Much Ado About Nothing, Part Two A Author: Saritaluv Rated: PG E-mail: saritaluv@yahoo.com Konnichiwa! Okay, minna-san, y’all are probably wondering: WHERE THE HECK HAS SHE BEEN?! Well, gomen, but I was on vacation for the last few weeks of August and I never had a chance to post chapter two!! Plus, I’m starting school again AND moving, so putting this together is not as easy as it seems!! Not to mention that A Sailor Moon Romance’s guidelines for submitting fanfiction is not as easy as it seems! As a result, I’m posting at Lady Starra’s and Alicia Blade’s wicked cool site. Arigato to both of you! Oh, in this chapter, things between Amy and Charles will move really fast (they did in the play too). Remember, this is just fiction, so it might and might not happen in real life. And this chapter is kinda long.okay, okay, it’s VERY long. I might have to have this chapter extend over a couple of chapters. It’s vital to my story, but I have no idea whatsoever on how to shorten it! Gomen, people, but bear with me! As always, thanks to Alicia Blade! Read her "Next Time Take the Stairs." It’s my favorite (and it’s funny, too!). But if you’re into real, serious, need-to-take-cold-showers-afterwards romance, go read her "Royal Flush." Wooh, shivers up and down my back. It’s good! You’ll love her work! I love you guys who e-mailed me!! Alphanumeric, I’m making friends all over the continent!! Luv ya, babes!! Standard disclaimer: Yeah right! As if I could own Sailor Moon! Wish I had all that money... ~CHAPTER TWO~ Darien drove his car up to the gymnasium. He couldn’t believe he was actually doing this. He got out of his car, arriving exactly at 7:00. He sighed. What was he doing there? He had never attended a dance in his whole life, never intended to, and never wanted to. But tonight was different...somehow. He had added a swirling black cape and two white leather gloves. On his feet were riding boots that he had borrowed from his neighbor and atop his head of black hair, he was wearing a French beret with a feather. He shook his head. In his apartment, he had looked amusing and swashbuckling. In the parking lot full of ghosts, vampires, ninjas, and witches, however, he felt like a complete fool. Turning around, he headed back to his car and was about to get in when he was caught in two headlights. "Darien?" three voices asked. He looked and saw two ghosts dressed in sheets and a witch. Andrew, Charles, and Rita. He might have known. "Yeah?" he asked nervously. They all stared at him, dumbfounded. He began to feel embarrassment. Did he look like an idiot? Finally, Rita broke the silence with a single word. "Wow." He was puzzled. "Huh?" "You look great!" Andrew blurted out. "Really?" Darien asked. "Yeah," Charles said. "Like a gentleman," Rita sighed. Andrew nudged her. She ignored him and instead kept her full gaze on Darien, drinking in his appearance. "Your costume is perfect, Darien," she said, "Except for one thing." Taking out an eyebrow pencil from her make-up bag, Rita drew a mustache and small goatee on Darien. So shocked at first, Darien couldn’t move. Then he squirmed, uncomfortable in Rita’s presence. "Hold still a minute, will ya?" she asked, annoyed. If he’d only sit still for just a few moments! He would look perfect with...there! "Okay, okay, now I’m done. Sheesh!" Rita stood back to admire her handiwork. She grinned. He was transformed. The change was minuscule, but the effect was startling. One of the two ghosts watched in real amusement. The other watched the gym door almost longingly. "Can we go in now?" Charles asked impatiently. "Sure, sure, go right ahead," Andrew said. Charles sighed and rolled his eyes. Didn’t Andrew know that he HAD to come with him? He was the one that was going to initiate the plan for tonight. Andrew, sensing his friend’s impatience, went with him into the gym with Rita. Darien followed silently behind. "Where’s Serena?" Lita yelled over the loud music. "What?" Mina asked, cupping her ear. "I said, WHERE’S SERENA?" Lita screamed down her ear. "Oh! I don’t know. Probably late. As usual," Mina replied. The girls were huddled by the buffet table. Raye was a witch, looking every bit the part. She had powdered her skin so that it was a pure, almost alabaster white. Her long, black hair fell down past her waist. She was wearing black lipstick and dark eyeliner. She also wore a short, SHORT black dress with torn sleeves and hem. Completing her ghastly appearance were black mesh nylons and black pumps. Mina came as a fairy. Her dress was an iridescent orange-yellow. She carried a golden wand with a plastic star covered in golden glitter at the end. She had traditional wire fairy wings and tiara. Lita was a cook/ninja. She wore a tight body suit and red headband with a white apron. Her weapon, instead of the sword, was a cooking spoon. Amy was charmingly dressed as a poodle girl. She wore a pale blue skirt with white cats playing with a ball of yarn. She was wearing a pale yellow cardigan and tied a yellow ribbon around her head into a bow. The girls devoured the sweets while they waited for Serena. "She’d better come soon," growled Raye, "Or I’m going to ruin my figure eating all these sweets!" "Why so worried about your figure, Raye?" Mina teased, "Have someone special at the back of your mind?" Raye glared at Mina. She only smiled innocently. Raye blushed, but no one noticed. Thank goodness for face powder. "Hi guys!" came the familiar voice. All four girls turned. Their jaws dropped. They were stunned. Serena had come as a princess. Her dress was white, with pale pink rosebuds decorating the hem and edge of her bodice. Her skirt was wide and full, with pale pink rosebuds where the edges of her skirt festooned, showing her frilly under-skirt. Her bodice was low-cut, again, with small pink rosebuds bordering her neckline. Her sleeves fell slightly over her arm, exposing pale, white shoulders. She wore white evening gloves that extended over her elbow. Crowning her golden meatball-head was a silver tiara (the same kind that Mina wore, only Serena’s outfit made it seem more regal). "So," Serena said, her face beaming, "Whatcha think?" "It’s very...beautiful," Amy said, at a loss for words. The others nodded in agreement. "Thanks, guys," Serena said, raiding the buffet, "I hope you left some food for me!" "There’s plenty of food," Raye said, "Just don’t pig it all down, Meatball Head! Save some food for the others!" Serena glared at Raye. She had been consuming food at an alarming rate. But she was too busy eating to reply. Darien entered the gym with his friends. He quickly put on his white domino mask, so nobody knew who he was. The gym was hot and stuffy from lack of ventilation. The music was on loud enough to blast one’s eardrums out, but the lyrics were indistinguishable because of the many bodies. He took in the scene with cool, calculating eyes. The room was festooned with black and orange streamers. Hanging from the ceiling (he briefly wondered how they got up there) were paper jack-o-lanterns, witches on broomsticks, and sheet-like ghosts in chains. The floor was littered with napkins, hay, and other bits and pieces of paper. Propped up against the bleachers were scarecrows. Mingling amongst them were people who did not come with dates, if they weren’t hanging around the buffet. ‘Not bad,’ he thought. ‘Wonder why I never came here before.’ Lovebirds were in the dark corners, kissing and smooching, completely oblivious to anyone else. Darien thought wryly, where were the chaperones when you needed them? Girls noticed the tall, dark, and dashing young man by the gymnasium door. They bombarded him. He groaned inwardly. ‘Maybe this was why.’ He fought through the wave of surging hormones (hee hee, I like that phrase) and found a safe berth hidden by the bleachers. "Whew!" he said quietly to himself. "I thought at least the mask would help diminish some of that!" He surveyed the crowds of people. The two ghosts and the witch were lost amid the sea of teenagers. His eyes wandered to the buffet table. His stomach growled for food. He walked over to the food, staying as far in the shadows as possible, trying to keep hidden from all eyes. He finally reached the cookies. ‘Safe!’ he thought. He backed up slightly and grabbed some punch when he bumped into someone. "Excuse me!" he yelled so that he could be heard. It was a ghost. "Andrew?" Darien asked loudly. Andrew nodded his head, but kept a finger to where his lips were supposed to be, signifying that Darien should be quiet. Puzzled, he watched as Andrew made advances to a blue-haired girl. Blue-haired girl? That was Amy! Meaning that the oh-so-annoying-but-adorable Meatball Head was there, if she wasn’t late. Maybe his evening wouldn’t be so bad after all. John Battamaki, Juuban High School’s vice president, stood at the entrance to the gym, taking in the scene. He was pretty much a loner, like Darien, but unlike Darien, he didn’t have any sex appeal. Girls avoided him because of his sulking, angry looks, but he could care less. He didn’t care about anything except power. He was thwarted in his plan to become school president by Charles Fujimatta; instead, he was voted vice-president. Because of this reason, he resented Charles with all his might (hey, I know that’s a pathetic reason to resent anybody, but I have to give a reason! You’ll understand as you read along, I hope. As you might have guessed, Charles is Claudio, Amy is Hero, and John is John the Bastard. I’m sorry, I was at a loss for creativity, okay?) All he wanted was revenge on Charles. To humiliate him, degrade him, or something! John would especially like for Charles to do something bad so that he would be dismissed from office. But Charles was such a goody-goody. So he would do with any way to make Mr. President unhappy. He watched the two twin ghosts. One of them obviously had to be Charles. He was surprised as one made his way to the buffet table to approach some girls. This was interesting. It couldn’t be Andrew, he already had a girlfriend. Then it must be Charles! He grinned, sensing a chance to make the school president miserable. The ghost approached the blue-haired girl, whom John knew as the chess queen. John watched as the ghost talked to the girl. Through the darkness, he saw her blush and nod a yes. ‘Hmm, so Charles Fujimatta is interested in a freshman, eh?’ Amy was surprised when she felt someone tap her shoulder. Turning around she saw a ghost. "Hello," she said pleasantly, "May I help you?" "Ahem," the ghost cleared his voice. "Amy?" "Yes?" she asked. "It’s me, Charles," the ghost said. Amy smiled happily. "Hello Charles," she said, trying to keep her voice from soaring. "Say Amy," Charles said, "Do you mind reserving the next slow dance for me?" She was taken aback. Why would the handsome school president be interested in her? The shy, mousy girl? ‘Don’t question him, just say yes!’ Amy told herself. Amy opened her mouth to say yes, but she was checked by a wave of shyness. The ghost looked slightly uncomfortable. She felt her cheeks color. "Why not?" she smiled, nodding her head in consent. The ghost nodded his. "I’ll see you around, Amy!" he said, disappearing into the crowd. She blushed. She had not stopped smiling for the past five minutes. "Way to go, Amy!" she felt Lita’s elbow nudge her ribs. She blushed. "What for?" "You’ve just been asked to dance by the school president! So, are you guys an item yet?" "What?!" Amy asked, incredulous. That thought had not even crossed her mind. "Whoa, I just want to know, that’s all," Lita shrugged. "No, of course not," Amy said hastily. ‘I wish, though,’ she thought. Serena was still eating. The brownies made their way onto her plate and down her throat in short order. She was attacking the chocolate chip cookies next. Darien approached her from behind. He threw his arms about her shoulders, bent his head, and whispered, "Boo!" "Aah!" Serena screamed, throwing her plate into the air. She was surprised more from the touch than the voice. She whirled around. Her jaw dropped open. Here stood a man from yesteryear. He wore a blade at his waist, a swirling cape around his shoulders, riding boots, riding gloves, a white mask... ‘Wow, he’s hot!’ Serena thought, her eyes running up and down his body. Darien chuckled as he saw the dumbfounded, love-struck expression in Serena’s face. He had never made her look that way before. He rather liked it having her drool all over him. She had never regarded him in that way before. "Good evening, my lady," he said, pitching his voice lower than his usual tenor. He took her gloved hand and kissed it, the way a gentleman would. Serena felt a blush rise in her cheeks. She giggled. "Good evening, sir," she said, trying to sound coy and flirtatious. "Are you Serena Tsukino?" Darien asked. The name felt strange on his lips. His mouth was so accustomed to saying "Meatball Head" that saying her actual name felt...foreign. "Why yes!" she said, smiling. "I’ve heard much about you," he said, jumping at this chance to get under her skin. He laughed evilly inside. "You have?" she asked, fluttering her eyelashes outrageously. Darien bit his lip. It was all he could do from bursting out into laughter. "Yes. I’ve heard that you are called Meatball Head," he tried to keep the chuckles out of his voice. The expression on her face was classic. Her mouth fell open and her eyes showed the whites all around those light blue orbs. Then her cheeks grew red and her blue eyes blazed. Darien couldn’t resist baiting her further. He couldn’t help it. She looked so cute when she was angry! "Yes, I’ve also heard that you were a klutz, a crybaby, and..." Serena looked as though she was about to explode. This couldn’t keep the quirky smile from his lips. It was too much! He took off into the crowd. Serena followed him. This was too perfect! She tapped his shoulder. "Tell me who told you that," she demanded. He shook his head. "I’m sorry, you must pardon me, I cannot." "Won’t you tell who you are then?" "No, not yet," he said. "Let me get this straight, you’ve heard that I’m called Meatball Head, that I am klutzy, and that I’m a crybaby, eh?" "Mmm hmm," Darien nodded his head. Serena pouted. He smiled. "Well, it was Mr. Darien Chiba that said so. Am I right?" Darien was surprised. He didn’t think that she’d ever suspect him. Clearing his voice, he asked, "Who is Mr. Chiba?" Serena raised a shapely eyebrow. "You’ve never heard of him? He’s a senior, tall, dark-haired, with...incredibly blue eyes..." Here Serena blushed. "...kinda cute..." ‘Kinda cute?’ Darien thought. ‘So, is that what Serena really thinks of me? Wow, never knew that before.’ But as if Serena heard his thought, she quickly amended herself. "But he’s a snob, conceited, arrogant, egotistical, and has a gift for just...getting under a girl’s skin. He thinks he’s all that, but he’s really not." That sounded more like the Serena he knew. But deep down inside his heart, he was slightly disappointed. He had rather liked the thought of Serena...LIKING him. He brushed that thought aside. ‘Come on, Darien, this is Serena we’re talking about. The ditzy, crybaby, annoying Meatball Head,’ he told himself. And yet, he still liked that feeling, the thought of Serena actually admitting he might mean something more to her than just a guy who teases her everyday. "Well, Miss Tsukino, when I meet the gentleman, I shall tell him what you said." "Please do," she said, smiling. A slow song began to play. "Shall we dance, mi’ lady?" Darien asked, offering her his arm. Serena blushed prettily, turning her eyes away decorously. "Uh...of course." Darien led her out to the dance floor and wrapped his arms around her small waist. Her arms came up and tentatively placed themselves around his shoulders. They swayed from side to side in time with the slow beat. Serena found herself swimming in a million different emotions. First, she had almost made a fool of herself by gawking at his hot guy. Embarrassment. Second, she had almost been taken in and made a bigger idiot of herself by trying to hopelessly flirt with the guy. The nerve! He had raised her hopes and expectations, only to squash them flat again. Surprise and anger. Third, she had made it sound as though she had a CRUSH on Darien Chiba. Of all people! The one guy she couldn’t stand! She had called him CUTE! She felt ridiculous. ‘Well, he isn’t bad-looking, that’s for sure,’ Serena thought. ‘Wait a second. This is Darien Chiba. Stop thinking like that!’ In the corner of Serena’s mind, however, she knew that Darien was anything BUT bad-looking. He was actually very handsome, but Serena would never admit that to herself. She quickly made up for her mistake by bad-mouthing him. Relief and...regret? Now, why in the world would she feel regret? Nothing but foul words had been exchanged between them ever since their first meeting...*flashback* "Aack! A thirty percent! Mom’s gonna kill me!" a blond-haired, pigtailed, meatball-headed girl moaned. She was staring at her algebra test, scrawled with red ink. "I knew I should have been studying at the library like I told my mom instead of playing Sailor V games!" she lamented. She glanced over at her red-haired friend’s paper. "What did you get, Molly?" she asked. "An eighty-five, Serena." she sighed. "Whaaat?!" Serena yelled. "An eighty-five still passes!" "I know, but I should have studied more." "Yeah," a strident new voice interrupted. Both Molly and Serena winced. It was Melvin, the school nerd. He was not gifted with any social graces. "I didn’t study either and I only got a ninety-five!" Molly and Serena sighed and sweat-dropped. They groaned. "Listen, if any of you girls need help, I’ll behappy to act as a tutor!" Melvin said, making suggestive faces. Both girls made a disgusted face. "What?! No way!" Serena yelled. "Uh, no thanks, Melvin," Molly said. Then Molly brightened. "Say Serena," she said, "My mom’s has some new rhinestone jewelry on sale. Wanna come?" "Yeah!" squealed Serena, her previous disappointment dissipating, "I love rhinestones! Heck, I love shopping!" "Great, let’s go!" Molly cried. Melvin watched the beautiful blonde run into the distance. "That Serena, beautiful, but a shopaholic." The meatball-headed blonde walked down the streets dejected. She stared at a piece of paper in her hand, the cause of her unhappy mood. "Mom’s going to kill me!" she said. Suddenly, in anger, she crumpled up the piece of paper. "I can’t go home because of you!" She hurled it with all her might behind her. She whirled around, pigtails dragging and shoulders sagging. "Ouch!" a voice said. It was a man’s voice, deep, but still a warm tenor. "Watch where you’re throwing things, Meatball Head!" "Ooh," Serena huffed, turning a bright shade of purple. "Don’t call me that!" She was taken aback. This guy was...was...HOT. He was tall, with dark hair and dark shades. The green blazer and gray trousers barely concealed his athletic frame. A surprised expression took over her face for a brief second before she remembered that she was angry at the man. He picked up the crumpled piece of paper and lifted his shades to take a look at it. Serena almost gasped. His eyes were a beautiful shade of dark, dark, midnight blue. At that moment, his beautiful blue eyes were wide open with shock. "Thirty percent? Are you dumb, or just really lazy, Meatball Head?" he said, teasingly. "Oh you," Serena started, but then thought the better of it. She snatched the paper back out of his hand and turned around haughtily. "The nerve of that guy, calling me a Meatball Head," she muttered to herself. But she turned around for another glimpse. "Still," she said as an afterthought, "He is kinda cute." *end of flashback* Unconsciously, Serena moved in closer to Darien’s chest (although she didn’t realize it was him). Darien’s arms automatically tightened around her small waist and her hands linked together behind his neck. The scent of his cologne wrapped around her. ‘Mmm,’ she thought, ‘He smells good. Like Darien." She was surprised. ‘Since when did I know what Darien smelled like?’ The man she was dancing with smelled...like rainwater...no, like the earth after it has just rained...no, like roses...yes, definitely roses. She looked up at the man. He looked back down at her. For a moment, she could see through the mask and could see the one she was dancing with. A glimpse of smiling, endless pools of midnight blue could be seen. Amy looked for Charles. She had promised him a slow dance and she might as well go through with it. She looked around for the ghost who had asked her to dance before. She stayed at the edges of the dancing mob, hoping to see him. She saw a ghost dancing with a witch. A pang of jealously ripped through her heart when she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around. It was another ghost. "Charles?" she asked. The ghost nodded. Holding out his arm, he walked her into the swaying crowd. Amy tentatively put her arms around his shoulders and his hands barely rested on her waist. They moved in time with the beat. Mina nudged Lita and smiled. They both giggled. "Are you thinking what I’m thinking?" Mina asked, with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes. "No, but where the Senshi of Love and Beauty is concerned, I’m guessing it has something to do with bringing Charles and Amy together. Am I right?" "You know me well, Lita," Mina giggled. Before thinking twice about her actions, Mina grabbed Lita’s hand and barged through the dancing crowd. Sounds of protest were uttered, but Mina ignored them. On the way through, Lita noticed Raye dancing with the senior, Chad Kumada. She’d have to make a mention of this to Mina later. But what really caught Lita’s attention was Serena, dancing with a dark-haired and tall senior. Lita guessed from the build that this was none other than her friend’s hated (or rather, strongly disliked, as Serena was incapable of hating anyone) enemy, Darien Chiba. ‘Interesting,’ Lita thought. ‘Since when did that one come about?’ Mina noticed that Lita was dragging behind. She was about to hiss at her when her eyes too caught what had Lita so entranced. Mina saw a blonde beauty dancing with a dark heartbreaker. But her romantic eyes didn’t see them as Serena and Darien. She saw them as an extremely cute couple that she would try and hook up later, AFTER she had dealt with Miss Mousy-Chess-Queen and the school president. Mina was the school matchmaker after all. When she was about to turn away, a sudden vision interrupted her thoughts. She saw the pair in her mind’s eye, surrounded by red rose petals, kissing underneath a moonlit sky. The girl was emanating an aura and the young man was too. The girl’s silver, and the young man’s golden. Where the two glows merged, a soft, muted, pinkish light pulsed. The light grew and enveloped the two... ‘Soul mates?’ Mina thought. ‘I gotta get those to together.’ She shook her head to clear the thought and paid attention to her original objective. ‘Of course, AFTER I deal with Amy.’ "Excuse me," she tapped the shoulder of a rather cute freshman, "Would you like to dance?" The poor guy was rather surprised, but who could turn away a beautiful face like hers? ‘What is she doing now?’ Lita thought as Mina dragged her partner into the center of the swaying masses. The two were inching their way to Amy and Charles, led by Mina, of course. Lita shook her head, half in pity, half in wonderment. The two midnight blue eyes disappeared as briefly as they had appeared. Serena could not stop a slight gasp. They were so familiar, where had she seen them before? ‘Darien’s eyes are that color,’ Serena’s heart thought. ‘No, they are not the same shade of blue,’ her mind argued. ‘Since when did you know the exact shade of midnight blue?’ her heart screamed back at her mind. Darien looked at Serena in surprise as she gasped. He chuckled. Bewilderment was not exactly a common feature on her face (although it occurred quite often). She was adorably cute! Her eyes would open wider in shock, then narrow in thought. Her pale, sky-blue eyes looked slightly confused. Her small, but full-lipped pink mouth would turn down slightly at the corners, her lower lips jutting out just slightly. A little furrow would appear between her eyebrows. A certain revelation came to Darien. Serena was a beautiful young woman. He couldn’t decide which feature he loved the best...her expressive eyes...maybe her cute nose...her full, small, and dainty lips... Darien decided not to think about her lips. It generated a VERY vivid picture of her kissing him. That image kindled in him a small spark of passion, and he would do anything to quench it. Still, he would give anything to kiss those sweet lips just once... Looking down at Serena, he could feel the passion flamed into a fury. He started closing the distance between their lips... As the young man Serena was dancing with looked down at her, she could see those midnight blue eyes through the mask. They were so emotional, a veritable storm of passions and feelings. Serena felt herself go limp, drowning in those passionate eyes. Darien found himself losing it in her eyes. They were so expressive. They were confused...fearful...longing...wanting that kiss... With a great mental effort, he restrained himself and turned his head away. He dared not look at Serena. He knew that her eyes would be relieved...and disappointed? Instead he saw a ghost dancing with Amy. That was like a bucket of ice water splashed on him, retrieving his senses (heh heh, Amy is the Senshi of Water and Ice, remember?). Darien drew his brows together. It couldn’t be Andrew, he was too devoted to Rita. But Charles was too shy around girls, especially those that he liked. Searching around the room, he saw another ghost dancing with the witch that was Rita. That obviously HAD to be Andrew. But then...the one dancing with Amy...it must be Charles! Okie, that's the first part to Chapter Two! Whatcha think? Read on!! ---------------------------------->
